alternator

About alternator

The alternator works by charging up the battery to power the starter motor, ignition and all other electrical components, replacing the generator used in pre-1960s cars. If this fails, your car's electronics will follow. Replace yours with one of the options below. Our Fit It For Me service is available if you'd LIKE your new alternator TO be fitted at one of our trusted garages.

What does the alternator do?

The alternator is an important component of the engine that charges the battery and supplies electricity to the car. It converts mechanical energy to electrical energy via the rotation of magnets.

How long do alternators last?

Most alternators have a long lifespan and last around seven years, or between 80,000 to 150,000 miles.

Can I test my alternator without removing it?

To test the alternator, disconnect the battery from the car before starting the engine. If the engine stalls while running, it indicates a faulty alternator.

Can a brand new alternator fail?

It's possible for a new alternator to fail with incorrect assembly. Tight or loose bearings, defective components or dirt contamination could be the cause.
