The brake pad sensor is a single-use, but nevertheless essential piece of equipment. It performs the job of alerting you when your brake pads are wearing thin, which in turn triggers a warning light to indicate that it’s time to replace the brakes.
The brake pad sensor works in conjunction with the brake pad, informing the driver when it has worn down. Each axle has its own sensor to monitor the front and rear brake pad conditions.
Given how important it is for your brake pads to be in top condition, it's recommended to change out your sensors if they need replacing.
No, a worn brake pad sensor won't lead to an immediate MOT failure.
It is not illegal to drive with a broken brake pad wear sensor, however it is recommended to get them replaced as soon as possible to monitor your brake pad wear.
