What is a car battery?

The battery in your car is a vital power source, giving the vehicle the juice it needs to get moving. Turning the ignition transmits a signal to the battery, at which point the lead and lead dioxide plates inside trigger a chemical reaction to produce electrons. The electricity generated by these electrons powers the car's starter motor and spark plugs, thereby igniting the fuel mixture in the combustion cylinders.

The alternator works alongside your car's battery to power the rest of the electrical systems, such as air conditioning and the radio.
