What does an EGR valve do?

The EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve helps manage the flow of exhaust gas throughout a vehicle. A measured amount is recirculated via the engine intake system into the combustion chamber, where it is burned again.

In petrol engines, this is to reduce the chance of spontaneous combustion or 'knock', which can increase overall petrol consumption. Diesel engines benefit from reduced nitrous oxide particles, thanks to this additional burning of exhaust gas.

How do you know if an EGR valve is faulty?

There are several signs of a faulty EGR valve you can monitor, such as:

-Increased fuel consumption -The smell of fuel at low revs -A rough idle period when starting the car or stopping at low engine speeds -Increased emissions from the exhaust -Knocking noises caused by the EGR valve being constantly closed

Can you still drive with a bad EGR valve?

Yes, you can still drive your car if the EGR valve is faulty. However, it's recommended to get it replaced as soon as possible to avoid a rough driving experience and prevent additional nitrous oxide particles from being emitted.

Can I fit an EGR valve myself?

Due to the need to access the engine chamber when replacing an EGR valve, it's not recommended to do so unless you have previous experience. The process for changing the valve can differ based on the car model you own; some might require more engine disassembly, whilst others might even need reprogramming.
