The sump plug is removed from the sump pan to drain engine oil during a service. Often the sump plug will have a stripped hex on the head of the bolt, or stripped threads, both usually due to over tightening of the sump plug during a service.
It is also recommended that the sump plug washer is replaced every service, regardless of the sump plug being replaced.
