Starter Motor

About Starter Motor

The starter motor is like the car's heart - it's what gets the whole system going. Used to start the engine, if a starter motor fails, the vehicle won't turn over or crank - and will need replacing. Find the product you need below, and choose Fit It For Me if you would like to have it installed at one of our trusted garages.

What does a starter motor do?

The starter motor works alongside the engine to help a car start during ignition. When turning the ignition key, the starter motor gets the engine's parts moving and enables air to be sucked in for combustion. Without air, there's no way for the fuel in the cylinders to start burning, making the starter motor an essential component in any car.

What are the warning signs of a bad starter motor?

Signs of a faulty or damaged starter motor include:

- Your car's engine doesn't rev or crank properly
- You hear a grinding or clicking sound when turning the ignition key
- The dashboard lights come on, but nothing else powers up
- The starter motor is covered in oil when lifting the bonnet

Can you drive with a broken starter motor?

We don't recommend driving if your car's starter motor is faulty. Trying to do so can lead your engine to fail or incur additional costs if other parts become damaged, such as the flywheel.

Is a starter motor easy to fix?

Replacing a starter motor can require significant work, even for an experienced mechanic. Other parts might need to be removed first before the starter motor can be worked on, so it's recommended to leave this to a professional.
